In launching the UK conservative party’s new election manifesto, British Prime Minister Theresa May has announced new policies that will make it more difficult for Australians to find work and move to the UK, and it will now cost Australians more to access the National Health Service.
The conservative manifesto aims to cut immigration numbers to more “sustainable” levels.
Included in the Conservative Party manifesto are such policies as these :
- We will double the Immigration Skills Charge levied on companies employing migrant workers, to £2,000 a year by the end of the parliament, using the revenue generated to invest in higher level skills training for workers in the UK.
- We will toughen the visa requirements for students, to make sure that we maintain high standards. We will expect students to leave the country at the end of their course, unless they meet new, higher requirements that allow them to work in Britain after their studies have concluded.
- Whilst the NHS will always treat people in an emergency, no matter where they are from, we will recover the cost of medical treatment from people not resident in the UK. We will ensure that new NHS numbers are not issued to patients until their eligibility has been verified. And we will increase the Immigration Health Surcharge, to £600 for migrant workers and £450 for international students, to cover their use of the NHS. This remains competitive compared to the costs of health insurance paid by UK nationals working or studying overseas.
- We will continue to bear down on immigration from outside the European Union. We will increase the earnings thresholds for people wishing to sponsor migrants for family visas.
Given the polls, it is likely the Conservative Party will win the election. So Aussies wanting to move to the UK need to hope Australia can negotiate preferential access for its citizens to the UK as part of the current Free Trade Agreement negotiations.
